The demand for obesity medications has surged over the past year, driven by a deeper understanding among medical professionals of obesity's root causes and the role treatment plays in preventing related conditions like heart disease. This growing awareness has sparked record interest, significantly boosting consumer demand and enabling a new class of appetite-suppressant drugs to exceed initial growth projections.
In light of this trend, Morgan Stanley Research has revised its global obesity medication market forecast, now predicting it to reach $105 billion by 2030—up from a previous estimate of $77 billion—with a potential to reach as high as $144 billion. In 2023, sales of branded obesity drugs totalled $6 billion.
There’s no doubt that weight-loss drugs are a growing trend. Denmark’s Novo Nordisk, thanks to its first-mover advantage in obesity treatments, has become Europe’s largest company by market value, standing at $572 billion.
The market potential is enormous, as the use of weight-loss medications to fight obesity remains significantly underutilised. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 42% of Americans are classified as obese, yet only 4 million people, or 1% of the U.S. population, were using GLP-1 obesity drugs last year (Source: BofA Global Research).
Usage is expected to surge: J.P. Morgan analysts predict that by the end of the decade, over 5% of the US population will be on GLP-1 weight-loss prescriptions (Source: J.P.Morgan). This anticipated rise explains why the obesity drug market, which reached $6 billion last year, could expand more than 16 times, to $100 billion, by 2030 according to Goldman Sachs analysts (Source: Goldman Sachs).
To benefit from this market trend, we have selected two products: a capital guaranteed Shark Note and a Bonus Note on the following underlyings:
- Novo Nordisk A/S (NOVOB DC)
- Pfizer Inc. (PFE UN)
- Roche Holding AG (ROG SW)
